Questions about our down duvets

Is your comforter certified?

All of our down comforters and pillows are DownPass certified. DownPass spot checks our operations to ensure that the down is ethically and sustainably sourced, and that the birds are treated humanely throughout the supply chain.

What are the advantages of a Zizzz feather duvet compared to a wool duvet?

A feather duvet is known for its insulating and breathable properties, as well as its ability to provide a fluffy and cozy feel.

Can they be used all throughout the year?

You can use a down duvet all throughout the year, though you should use a lighter down duvet in the summer.

How does a down comforter differ from a synthetically made comforter?

Comforters with synthetic fibers are predominantly petroleum-based and, when washed, can release long-lasting microfiber particles that are not filtered out of wastewater one hundred percent and thus end up in rivers, oceans and ultimately in our food chain. One of the largest major sources of pollution is the textile industry, as the use of synthetic fibers increases the amount of microplastics in our natural environment. Microplastics can also enter the human body, and since plastic particles often contain urban substances or toxic substances, they can thus enter our bloodstream and cause harm.
In addition, comforters with synthetic fibers are not very good at absorbing moisture, a point that should not be underestimated when buying a new comforter, humans lose at least a quarter of a liter of liquid per night and most of it ends up in the comforter and can lead to mold. Comforters with synthetic fibers also need to be replaced more frequently due to their shorter shelf life, which leads to a higher environmental impact. Natural materials are more environmentally friendly because not only are they biodegradable, but they are also less polluted and come from renewable sources.
In comparison, our down comforters at Zizzz can absorb a lot of moisture and are extremely breathable. Furthermore, they also impress with their long durability and are ecologically sound. With our comforters you can not only do something for the environment, but you also save money in the long run.

Where does high-quality down come from?

High-quality down typically comes from the underbelly of geese or ducks, where the down clusters are the largest and the most insulating. The best down is usually sourced from mature birds, which naturally have larger and more mature down clusters.
The country of origin can also be an important factor in determining the quality of the down. For example, down from countries with colder climates, such as Canada, Iceland, and Eastern Europe, is generally considered to be of higher quality, as the birds are exposed to harsher conditions. This leads the animals to grow denser and more insulating down clusters.
Finally, down's quality also depends on the processing methods used, such as how the down is washed and sterilized. The standards set by industry certifications, such as DownPass or the Responsible Down Standard (RDS), also play an important role. These certifications ensure that the down is ethically and sustainably sourced, and that the birds are treated humanely throughout the entire supply chain.
Our goose and duck down is sourced from Eastern Europe. All of our down duvets and pillows are DownPass certified.

How warm are down duvets?

Down duvets are known for being excellent insulators. A down duvet is warmer than a wool duvet of equal weight, for example. How warm a down duvet is depends on its fill power and weight. Higher fill power and weight indicate a warmer duvet.

Whom are down duvets best suited for?

Down duvets are best suited for individuals who are looking for a lightweight and fluffy duvet which provide exceptional warmth and insulation. Down is a natural and luxurious material that provides a high level of loft, which means that down duvets can offer excellent warmth without feeling heavy or bulky. Down duvets are also known for their ability to fit the sleeper's body.
Down duvets may not be the best option for people who tend to sleep hot, as they can trap heat and cause the sleeper to overheat. Hot sleepers are best-served by a wool duvet.

Why choose a DownPass sealed down comforter?

Choosing a down comforter from Zizzz means choosing quality and sustainability. We care about the environment and animal welfare, which is why all our products have been audited according to the DOWNPASS standard.
This certification means that our down does not come from animals plucked alive or force-fed for foie gras production. In addition, the animals must be kept under humane conditions. Other basic requirements to pass the audit are "adequate housing, sufficient supply of feed and fresh water, protection of the animals from diseases and natural enemies, and care by knowledgeable staff.

Why do the prices of goose and duck down comforters differ so much?

This is a good question.
The size of the down fluff is its key quality feature. The larger the down flakes, the higher the quality of the filling material, because large-fluff down can trap more air or heat and therefore has superior insulating power.
Accordingly, the quality of goose down is higher compared to duck down. Of course, geese are larger than ducks. Goose down flakes are proportionally larger, so their down also provides better insulation.
This does not mean that our duck down comforters are not of good quality, because the opposite is true. First of all, both our goose and duck down comes from Eastern Europe. In the textile industry, down from Eastern European goose or duck breeding is known for its high quality, because the cold climate stimulates the animals to grow thicker, insulating down.
Secondly, our down filling consists of 90% down and 10% feathers. This provides high sleeping comfort for you, because down is softer than feathers; moreover, down has no keel. Therefore, you will not feel any pinpricks at night when you sleep with Zizzz down comforter.

Duck down or goose down - which is better?

We at Zizzz have both duck down and premium goose down comforters on offer. So, while strolling through our online store, the question might arise as to which is better and what else to look out for.
Duck down has a very good thermal performance, and duck down comforters are cheaper than goose down comforters.
Goose down has excellent thermal performance, which is due to the fact that it is slightly larger. Air is trapped in the small ramifications of the down, so it is cozy and warm under the comforters even on the coldest nights.
Both Zizzz Down Duvets are machine washable, but tennis balls must be added during the wash cycle to prevent the down from clumping, otherwise it will not insulate as well.
Zizzz down comforters also have DownPass certification, meaning they meet the highest ethical standards. So in our products there is neither material from live plucking nor from foie gras produc

What are the benefits of using a down duvet?

The benefits of down duvets include their natural insulating properties, lightness, and fluffiness. If properly cared for, down duvets can also last for many years.
Down duvets are warmer, softer and lighter than synthetic or wool duvets. Unlike feathers, down is voluminous in shape and does not have a hard stem or quill. Down is found on the belly area of geese and ducks, beneath the feathers, and serves to keep the animals warm in winter and cool in summer. The structure of a down cluster is similar to that of a snowflake. The individual down clusters are negatively charged and arranged in a radial pattern, which means they are always spaced apart. The insulating power is generated by the air cushions between the individual down flakes. These air cushions provide the space in which down can trap moisture and transport it away to the outside, away from your body.

How do I keep my down duvet in good condition?

To care for your down duvet, you should fluff it daily to keep its loft and prevent any clumps from forming. Down duvets should be washed and dried in commercial-size machines or professionally dry-cleaned. Avoid using fabric softeners or bleach, as these can damage the down clusters.

Have you ever wanted to know where our goose down comes from?

Our goose down comforters are DOWNPASS certified, which means "that no goods from live animals (exclusion of molting and live plucking) or animals raised for foie gras production are accepted as fill material."
Farming conditions are also covered by the DOWNPASS standard. Our goose down comes from farms in Eastern Europe. On our goose down products you will find a code that can be entered on the DOWNPASS website to check.
We at Zizzz act responsibly, fairly and transparent

Are down duvets hypoallergenic?

Down duvets are not inherently hypoallergenic, as some people may be allergic to the proteins in the down feathers. However, high-quality down duvets are often treated to remove allergens and dust particles.
At Zizzz, our down duvets are NoMite certified. The cotton case our duvet comes in is woven so densely that it is difficult for mites to enter it, making it great for asthma and dust allergy sufferers.

What is a down duvet? How are down duvets different from synthetic or wool duvets?

A down duvet is a type of duvet filled with the soft, fluffy clusters taken from the underside of geese or ducks. Down is known for its lightness, warmth, and fluffiness. Synthetic duvets, on the other hand, are made from man-made, artificial materials, while wool duvets are made from natural wool fibers, usually those of sheep, lamas, camels or alpacas.

What is the difference between fill power and fill weight in a down duvet?

Fill power refers to the loftiness and insulating properties of the down clusters, while fill weight refers to the total weight of the down used in the duvet. As stated above, higher fill power and weight indicate that the duvet is warmer and more luxurious.
The fill power of our down products is indicated in the product info above.

Can down duvets be used with a duvet cover?

Yes, you should absolutely use a duvet cover with your down duvet to protect it from dirt, stains and general wear and tear.
At Zizzz, we offer breathable duvet covers made from certified organic cotton.

Are down duvets more expensive than other types of duvets?

Down duvets can be more expensive than synthetic duvets, but the price depends on factors like the down's quality, the manufacturing process and country of manufacture.
At Zizzz, we keep our prices down by selling our products online and thereby eliminating middlemen and wholesalers, thereby keeping a top quality Swiss or German-made down duvet affordable for our customers.
