Which pillow suits a child?
Zizzz does not make a separate children's pillow: these are the two smallest sizes in the range, the ones that fit a child's bed. They have the same filling and the same casing as all the others.
| Size | Fill weight | Why this size |
|---|---|---|
| 40 × 60 cm | 550 g | the flattest in the range: it builds up very little and gives way easily under a small head |
| 50 × 70 cm | 750 g | a little larger and a little higher, for a child who has grown or for a wider bed |
Those are the only two sizes on this page. The full range runs to six, up to the large squares for adults.
What Zizzz children's pillows are made of
| Specification | 40 × 60 cm and 50 × 70 cm |
|---|---|
| Filling | 85 % duck feathers, 15 % duck down |
| Origin of the filling | feathers and down from European ducks |
| Casing | organic cotton cambric |
| Fill weight | 550 g in 40 × 60 cm, 750 g in 50 × 70 cm |
| Made in | the Black Forest, Germany |
| Certification | organic cotton, DOWNPASS, NOMITE |
| Care | machine, delicate cycle, tumble dry on low |
The casing is an organic cotton cambric: finely and tightly woven, soft against the skin and still dense enough to hold the filling in.
The down pillows page goes into the detail: what the feathers and the down each contribute, and what the two labels cover.
From what age?
During the first year of life a baby should sleep without a pillow.
After that a child does not automatically need one: it depends on their size, on their bed and on how they sleep. Some children ask for one at two or three, others much later, and neither is unusual. If you are unsure, ask your paediatrician — they know your child. When to give a child their first pillow is on the blog.
The sleeping environment as a whole matters more than the accessory: a bed that fits, bedding in the right size, and nothing bulky around the head.
What height for a child?
A child has narrow shoulders: the gap between shoulder and head is smaller than in an adult, and a high pillow often puts the head too far up. That is why the 40 × 60 cm, at 550 g, is the usual starting point.
The 50 × 70 cm at 750 g comes later, when the child has grown or the bed goes up a size. The change is not obligatory: plenty of people stay with the smaller size.
Organic cotton, DOWNPASS and NOMITE
DOWNPASS covers where the filling comes from: traceability from the farm to the finished product, no live plucking and no force feeding. Why traceability matters.
NOMITE indicates that the pillow is suitable for people with a house dust mite allergy, thanks to the tightly woven cambric. The label says nothing about other allergies and is not a substitute for medical advice. What that means day to day.
How to wash a child's pillow
A child's pillow gets dirty faster: a cover and regular airing do most of the work. Children's pillowcases come in both sizes.
For a full wash: machine on a delicate cycle with a mild detergent, then tumble dry on low — check the care label for the washing temperature. The filling has to be dry all the way through before the pillow is used again; a few clean dryer balls help it regain its volume. Which bedding to choose with a dust mite allergy is on the blog.
Frequently asked questions about children's pillows
At what age can a child use a pillow?
During the first year of life a baby should sleep without a pillow. After that a child does not automatically need one: it depends on their size and on how they sleep. If you are unsure, ask your paediatrician.
Which size, 40 × 60 or 50 × 70 cm?
The 40 × 60 cm is the flattest, with 550 g of filling: it is the usual starting point. The 50 × 70 cm at 750 g suits a child who has grown, or a wider bed.
Does the children's pillow have a different filling?
No. It is the same as in the other sizes: 85 % feathers and 15 % down from European ducks, in an organic cotton cambric casing. Only the size changes.
Are these pillows suitable for children with a house dust mite allergy?
They carry the NOMITE label: the tightly woven organic cotton cambric keeps dust mites out. The label says nothing about other allergies and is not a substitute for medical advice.
Which cover does a child's pillow need?
A cover the size of the pillow: 40 × 60 cm or 50 × 70 cm, in percale or organic cotton satin.
Where are these pillows made?
In the Black Forest, in Germany, like every Zizzz pillow.
