What the Zizzz pillow is made of
Every Zizzz feather pillow is built the same way: 85 % feathers and 15 % down from European ducks, in an organic cotton cambric. Only the fill weight follows the size.
| Specification | All six sizes |
|---|---|
| Filling | 85 % duck feathers, 15 % duck down |
| Origin of the filling | feathers and down from European ducks |
| Casing | organic cotton cambric |
| Fill weight | 550 g to 1150 g depending on the size |
| Made in | the Black Forest, Germany |
| Certification | organic cotton, DOWNPASS, NOMITE |
| Care | machine, delicate cycle, tumble dry on low |
The category name is a shorthand: this is not a pure down pillow. Most of the filling is feathers, and that is deliberate — a pillow of down alone would give way too far under the head.
The casing is an organic cotton cambric: finely and tightly woven, it holds the filling in and at the same time forms a barrier against dust mites.
The six sizes
| Size | Fill weight | Shape | Where it is the standard |
|---|---|---|---|
| 40 × 60 cm | 550 g | the flattest in the range | children's beds across Europe |
| 40 × 80 cm | 750 g | narrow and long, takes little width | Germany and Austria, alongside the 80 × 80 |
| 50 × 70 cm | 750 g | the versatile rectangle | Scandinavia, the Netherlands and the UK |
| 60 × 60 cm | 750 g | a compact square | France and Belgium, as the smaller square |
| 65 × 65 cm | 880 g | a larger square | France |
| 80 × 80 cm | 1150 g | the largest surface in the range | Germany and Austria |
The fill weight rises with the surface, so that the height of the pillow stays comparable across the range. The overview of all our pillows helps with choosing the size itself.
Feathers or down: what is the difference?
Feathers have a quill. They are stiffer, they spring back and they hold the pillow in shape — the support comes from them.
Down has no quill. It is lighter and softer and moulds around you — the softness comes from it.
The 85 % to 15 % ratio is the same in all six sizes. A higher share of down would give a softer pillow that gives way further under the head; a pillow of feathers alone would be firmer and heavier.
What height suits which sleeping position?
The height that suits you depends more on your sleeping position, the width of your shoulders and your mattress than on the size. Side sleepers generally need more height, to close the gap between shoulder and head; on your front, a flatter pillow is usually more comfortable.
Because the filling is identical throughout, the fill weight is what expresses that height. The flattest is the 40 × 60 cm at 550 g, the most filled the 80 × 80 cm at 1150 g; the 50 × 70 cm sits between them at 750 g and copes with most sleeping positions.
DOWNPASS and NOMITE
DOWNPASS covers where the filling comes from: traceability from the farm to the finished product, no live plucking and no force feeding. Why traceability matters.
NOMITE indicates that the pillow is suitable for people with a house dust mite allergy, thanks to the tightly woven cambric rather than to any treatment of the material. The label says nothing about other allergies and is not a substitute for medical advice. What that means day to day.
How to look after a feather and down pillow
Day to day, shake the pillow out and air it regularly; a cover protects it from perspiration and wear. Zizzz pillowcases come in the same sizes.
For a full wash: machine on a delicate cycle with a mild detergent, then tumble dry on low — check the care label for the washing temperature. The filling has to be dry all the way through before you use the pillow again; a few clean dryer balls help it regain its volume. Which bedding to choose with a dust mite allergy is on the blog.
Frequently asked questions about feather and down pillows
Is this a pure down pillow?
No. The filling is 85 % feathers and 15 % down. The feathers give the support and the down gives the softness; a pillow of down alone would give way too far under the head.
Where do the feathers and down come from?
From European ducks, through a supply chain controlled and traceable under DOWNPASS.
What does the DOWNPASS certification guarantee?
Traceability of the filling from the farm to the finished product, and the exclusion of live plucking and force feeding.
Is the pillow suitable with a house dust mite allergy?
It carries the NOMITE label: the tightly woven organic cotton cambric keeps dust mites out. The label says nothing about other allergies and is not a substitute for medical advice.
What is the casing made of?
A cambric of certified organic cotton: finely and tightly woven, so that the filling stays inside the pillow.
Which sizes does the pillow come in?
Six: 40 × 60, 40 × 80, 50 × 70, 60 × 60, 65 × 65 and 80 × 80 cm, with 550 g to 1150 g of filling.
Where is the pillow made?
In the Black Forest, in Germany.
How long does a feather and down pillow last?
That depends on how it is looked after. Shaking it out, airing it regularly and keeping it in a cover all extend its life; replace it when it stays flat and no longer plumps up.
