The Benefits of Our Pillows for People with Allergies

If you are allergic to dust mites, choosing a pillow deserves a little more attention than you might think. Moisture, the filling material, the fabric of the cover and the possibility of washing the pillow all play a role.

At Zizzz, we have chosen an approach that is particularly relevant for people sensitive to dust mites: our European duck down pillows, whose tightly woven cover forms a barrier against dust mites and which can be washed at 60 °C.

We will explain what distinguishes our duck down pillow and which criteria are worth considering, so you can choose a pillow that suits your sleeping habits.

Key takeaway: our pillows are not medical devices and do not treat allergies. Their benefits lie in their materials, their tightly woven cover, their NOMITE certification and their washability at 60 °C.

An approach to bedding for people with allergies

Our European duck down pillow relies primarily on its cover.

Our pillow has a tightly woven organic cotton cover and carries the NOMITE label. This combination forms a natural barrier against dust mites. The pillow can also be washed at 60 °C.

We have also made an important choice: no chemical "anti-allergy" treatment on the filling.

Our duck down pillow: NOMITE and washing at 60 °C

With our duck down pillow, the cover plays an essential role.

The NOMITE label identifies feather and down bedding products whose tightly woven fabric forms a natural barrier against dust mites.

The cover therefore needs to be sufficiently dense to prevent feathers from passing through. This density also helps keep dust mites and their residues contained.

Our European duck down pillow is covered with a fine, silky organic cotton batiste and carries the NOMITE label.

Another important advantage is that it can be washed at 60 °C. This makes it possible to clean the pillow at a temperature particularly suited to removing dust mites and their residues.

Our duck down filling contains 15% duck down and 85% duck feathers. This balance is designed to provide a pillow that is neither too hard nor too soft. The pillow is made in Germany, in the Black Forest region.

It is also DownPass certified, which means the down and feathers are sourced according to the DownPass standard, without live-plucking or force-feeding.

Why is washability important for people with dust mite allergies?

Dust mites and their residues can accumulate in bedding. Being able to wash a pillow regularly at a high temperature can therefore be an advantage for people who are sensitive to dust mites.

Our duck down pillow can be washed at 60 °C. After washing, it is essential to dry the pillow completely.

Regular airing and daily fluffing also help maintain the pillow between washes.

What about the pillowcase?

Even the best pillow will not stay clean without a suitable pillowcase.

The pillowcase is the piece of bedding that comes into the most direct contact with your face. It therefore also accumulates sweat, skin flakes and residues.

For this reason, we recommend a tightly woven pillowcase that can be washed at 60 °C.

Our organic cotton percale and satin pillow covers are designed to provide a comfortable, breathable layer between you and your pillow.

And most importantly: change your pillowcase more often than the rest of your bedding if you are particularly sensitive.

How should you care for our duck down pillow?

Our duck down pillow can be washed at 60 °C. After washing, it is essential to dry it completely.

A tumble dryer can be used on a low heat setting with a few clean dryer balls to help the filling recover its volume. Avoid fabric softeners and bleach, as they can damage the down and feathers.

Fluffing the pillow regularly helps it keep its shape. Airing it regularly also helps keep it fresh between washes.

The pillowcase is nevertheless the part that deserves the most regular washing because it is directly in contact with your face.

When is our pillow not suitable?

An allergy to dust mites and an allergy to the pillow material itself are two different things.

If you are allergic or sensitive to down or feathers, a down pillow may not be suitable, even if it carries the NOMITE label. NOMITE concerns dust mites, not allergies to the feathers or down themselves. A down pillow is not hypoallergenic in itself, and we do not describe it as such.

Finally, severe dust mite allergies may require additional measures. Even a carefully chosen pillow does not replace medical treatment or a fully enclosed anti-dust-mite cover (encasing) when one is recommended.

We do not manufacture encasings and do not claim that our pillow can replace them.

So, which pillow should you choose?

There is no single "best pillow" for everyone with allergies.

If your priority is being able to wash your pillow at 60 °C, particularly because you are sensitive to dust mites, our NOMITE-certified European duck down pillow is one option to consider. Its tightly woven organic cotton cover forms a barrier against dust mites and the pillow can be washed at 60 °C.

We favour natural materials and an organic cotton cover without chemical "anti-allergy" treatments.

Our pillow can be tried for 30 nights, with free delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Which Zizzz pillow should I choose if I have a dust mite allergy?

Our European duck down pillow may be suitable for people sensitive to dust mites. It has a tightly woven cover carrying the NOMITE certification and can be washed at 60 °C.

What is special about the European duck down pillow?

Our duck down pillow contains 15% duck down and 85% duck feathers. This combination is designed to provide a pillow that is neither too hard nor too soft. Its organic cotton batiste cover is NOMITE certified, and the pillow is made in Germany.

What does the NOMITE label mean?

NOMITE indicates that feather and down bedding products have a sufficiently dense cover to form a natural barrier against dust mites. The label does not mean that a product is suitable for people who are allergic to feathers or down.

Can the pillow be washed at 60 °C?

Yes, our European duck down pillow can be washed at 60 °C. After washing, it is essential to dry it completely. A tumble dryer can be used on a low heat setting with a few clean dryer balls to help the filling recover its volume.

Is a down pillow suitable if I have a dust mite allergy?

Our duck down pillow is NOMITE certified and can be washed at 60 °C. However, NOMITE addresses dust mites and does not mean that the pillow is suitable for people who are allergic or sensitive to down or feathers themselves.

Should I change my pillowcase more often if I have an allergy?

Yes. The pillowcase is in direct contact with your face and accumulates sweat, skin flakes and residues. It is therefore advisable to change it more often than the rest of your bedding and to choose a model that can be washed at 60 °C.

Are synthetic pillows better for people with allergies?

Not necessarily. A synthetic fibre is not automatically better suited to people with allergies. We favour natural fillings and avoid chemical "anti-allergy" treatments, while choosing a cover that is tightly woven and easy to care for.
